How to Harness River

Tamilnadu

During 1972 floods, ‘PeriaOdai’ in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu got breached, causing severe shortage of water to the farmers in the area. NABARD supported the construction of a 31.80 meter long bed dam that has helped the river bed reach its original level and is replenishing the wells in downstream of the bed dam. All this means that farmers in the affected area now have water available for longer periods.

The Tide Has Turned

Tamil Nadu

Farmers of Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu were receiving very little water at the tail end of the Amaravathi river due to damage to the river system. Loans from NABARD’s Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) helped repair the damage to the river, ensuring farmers get more water and for more number of days.

Bridges that Connect to Prosperity

Assam

Villagers staying near the Barpeta town of Assam had to travel 2-3 hours to the city market even for basic necessities of life. And farmers living around the town had to incur heavy expenditure to transport their produce to the local markets, resulting in many instances of distress sale. NABARD supported an initiative of building a bridge that linked the villages to local city markets and reduced commuting time to 25-40 minutes.
