Marketing is a real problem for rural artisans. Factors like low demand, low output and poor quality eventually lead to low incomes for skilled artisans. NABARD addresses this challenge by organizing Surajkund International Crafts Mela every year that exposes 200 artisans to elite customers from towns and cities. During the last 5 years, the sales turnover of the Mela have ranged from Rs. 25 to 60 lacs.

Jammu and Kashmir

In spite of producing the best basmati rice in their region, farmers in Jammu, Samba and Katra districts of Jammu and Kashmir had to do distress sale. NABARD initiated a pilot project for Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) to provide world-class warehousing facilities to these farmers, thereby stopping distress sale and leading to better crop price discovery.

West Bengal

Two paper mills in West Bengal were running into losses due to irregular supply of bamboo, their main raw material. Workers employed in the mills were getting seriously affected by irregular work and delayed payments. NABARD joined hands with Hindustan Paper Corporation to facilitate timely and adequate flow of funds to bamboo farmers, resulting in consistent supply of raw material to the mills.
