Students Teach a New Lesson in Finance

Initiative: 
Promoting school children as ambassadors of financial literacy
Beneficiaries: 
Villagers of Bihrada and Sultanpur villages of Mirzapur and Jaunpur Districts
The challenge: 
Various hurdles were being faced in accessing financial and banking services by the largely illiterate villagers. Unawareness, inhibitions about formal credit among the poor were another major hindrances. Bringing them in the banking fold was a big challenge
The solution:
  • NABARD UPRO launched a unique project titled “School Children as ambassadors for financial literacy”. School children were motivated to educate their parents and other villagers about various aspects of financial inclusion
  • School children (above class VIII) were taught about financial inclusion through magic shows followed by a school quiz and prize distribution
  • A week later, this was followed by a village level campaign for opening bank accounts, wherein these school children played a sterling role by filling application forms and discussing the benefits of having bank accounts
  • Km. Nagina, 17 years, a XIth grade student of Bihrada village and Km. Kiran, 16 years, a Xth grade student of Sultanpur village were chosen as the ambassadors of financial literacy. They successfully motivated women in their villages to open accounts and form Self Help Groups, besides helping them in filling bank accounts, etc
The impact:
  • The response from the children was overwhelming with about 9000 applications generated (Saving Bank A/c.s, KCCs, SHGs, insurance and term loans) in 140 programmes done across 6 BEGERI districts
  • Within a matter of 4 months of the programme, with the help of NGO partner Mahila Prabodhini, Kumari Nagina had opened 65 SB accounts and promoted 35 SHGs while Kiran had opened 55 SB accounts and promoted 30 SHGs in their respective villages
  • Both the girls were felicitated by NABARD on the occasion of its 32nd Foundation Day
