Pilot project on augmenting productivity of pulse crops

Farmers of Jhansi District
The Challenge:
- Pulses are the major source of proteins to vegetarians
- Productivity of pulses is very poor
- Agronomic practices followed are primitive
- High yielding varieties & proper practices are required to be adopted for enhancing productivity
- But breaking the jinx is not easy!
The Solution:
- A dynamic financial aid project was sanctioned to BIRD Charitable Trust by NABARD to break this very jinx
- The project helped farmers choose high yielding varieties of pulses and adopt superior agronomic practices through appropriate agricultural extension
- Forging relationships with Indian Institute of Pulse Research, Kanpur and the Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh
- Reaping better price through grading and collective marketing
