Fishing harbours are logical steps for concentration of fishing activity, i.e. bringing about a change from the diffused and scattered nature of the industry to concentration of modern methods of handling and marketing. Therefore, fishing harbour is an important factor in the development of marine fishing industry for proper functioning of fishing units and getting the right quantity and quality of fish landed for distribution as fresh fish or for processing. The capacity of fishery harbours created so far has been negligible considering large number of boats being introduced every year. A full fledged fishery harbour comprises fish landing quay, berthing basin, an out-fitting quay for replenishing fuel, water and other asocessories required for fishing trip, a navigable approach at all tides and slipway or dry dock for repairs. Inspite of great importance of this infrastructure to the development of marine fisheries, the pace of progress made by State Government has been slow.
Concept
To bridge the gap of demand and supply of fishing infrastructural facilities of the Harbour arising out of increased development of inland and marine fisher activity in the district.
Objectives
To provide adequate landing and berthing facilities and related fishing infrastructure.
Project Components
Fish landing Jetty equipped with fuel, water, repair berth, approach arrangements together with workshop, ice plant, power distribution system auction hall, sewage disposal, road facilities etc. within harbour area.
Major Features
132 m long Fish landing Jetty have eased the pre project scrambling of fishing vessels for landing, berthing space and related facilities and fishing gears. Fishing activities in this region have received a new momentum with creation of better infrastructure. Revenue income from the project has shown substantial increase within only 9 months of its commissioning (Rs.8.23 lakh from Rs. 7.79 lakh in 1999-2000) and the income is expected to increase manifold in the years to come.
Uniqueness
Project is giving the desired thrust of mechanization in marine fishing activities while attaching equal importance to traditional inland fishing activities of the region.
