The Cardamom Dream

Arunachal Pradesh

The Challenge:

The community relied heavily on opium cultivation and it was difficult to introduce any another means of livelihood
The remoteness of the area and continuous landslides made these places inaccessible

The Solution:

The youth were organized into Farmers Clubs and trained in farming, accounting and maintaining paperwork
Farmers Clubs also reached out to remote communities and helped them access the market for trade through the year

The Impact:

Opium has been replaced with cardamom
Drop in opium addiction
Further the Farmers Clubs organize several cultural activities for the people, restoring a sense of pride in the community
