The Cardamom Dream
Arunachal Pradesh
The Challenge:
  • The community relied heavily on opium cultivation and it was difficult to introduce any another means of livelihood
  • The remoteness of the area and continuous landslides made these places inaccessible

The Solution:
  • The youth were organized into Farmers Clubs and trained in farming, accounting and maintaining paperwork
  • Farmers Clubs also reached out to remote communities and helped them access the market for trade through the year

The Impact:
  • Opium has been replaced with cardamom
  • Drop in opium addiction
  • Further the Farmers Clubs organize several cultural activities for the people, restoring a sense of pride in the community
