Banaras Wood Carving Craft

The masterpieces crafted on the prized Whitewood or White Cedar Wood where exquisite artistry is presented, originated in the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. These intricate carvings are brought to life by the artisan's skilful hands, where each component is carved separately, meticulously shaping the essence of the elephant. The artform Varanasi woodcarving is a form of woodwork where the artisan uses a combination of either a cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel in both the hands or chisel in one hand and a mallet in the other. Their dexterity with these tools results in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. The artisans behind this magnificent creation find their inspiration in mythology, animals, birds, rural life and iconic elements such as Dasavataram and dancing dolls. Each crafted piece holds a story within its intricate details, reflecting the rich heritage and cultural significance of the region. GI Tag The GI tag awarded in 2018 with support from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has enabled the craft’s promotion at international level, giving it the publicity it deserves. This has positively influenced the industry and artisans of the region by providing a security to their livelihood.
