Sanganeri hand block printed textiles, which date back almost 500 years, are distinguished by their beautiful multicoloured flower designs. Traditionally, the mastery of Sanganeri artisans and their understanding of space and patterning on cloth surfaces was what made their designs so unique.
The artform
Traditionally, the Jaipur buti was carved into a small wooden block in the shape of an animal or flower. The design was then printed at precisely calculated intervals on a piece of cushioned fabric that had been dyed in a vegetable dye after the carved block had been pressed onto it. When the same procedure was carried out using various blocks and colours, stunning designs with startling regularity were produced. Over the years, there has not been much of a change to the conventional hand block printing process.
