A woolen blanket traditionally worn by Shauka women, the thulma is light in weight and keeps the wearer warm. The fabric is brushed on the inside which gives it a richer texture.
The artform
The thulma blanket is renowned for its exquisite patterns and premium fur. In the village, women weave the blankets, and men help with the yarn spinning. Either a pit loom or a frame loom is used to weave thulma. Long strips of it are woven, cut, and sewn together. The blanket stitch is used to complete the edges.
