Barabanki Handloom

The Barabanki handloom cluster is the hub of both applique-and-cut and zari work. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district, the products produced in the cluster are in high demand in the home market.

The artform

Before being transferred to the yarn to be woven through the warp and weft, the design is first hand-drawn on paper. Only the regulated warp threads are elevated in accordance with the design when this jaal (mesh) effect is attached to the warp threads and hovered from the top of the loom. Row after row, more zari or silk weft threads are slid into the elevated areas beside the flowing weft thread. The designs are applied on a variety of colors, including white satin, blue, yellow, and dark red.
