In rural areas, more people are dependent
on handicrafts than urban areas. Overall, 2.2
per cent of workers in the country gain their
livelihoods from handicrafts sector.
The Development Commissioner (DC)
of Handicrafts has the responsibility of
planning and implementing measures for
development and growth of the handicrafts
sector. A design and technical upgrada-
tion scheme will cater to enhancement
of artisans’ skills through development
of new design and supply of prototypes of
improved/modern equipments to the craft
persons and revival of rare crafts. Apart
from skills training, tool kits are provided
and market information on colours and
