Initiative:

Reduction in dependency on informal credit through JLGs

Beneficiaries:

Artisans engaged in willow weaving industry, Kulgam district, Jammu & Kashmir

The Challenge:

• Willow weaving is the only means of livelihood of Shakzah families (Kangri weavers)
• Marginal formal banking services in Kulgam

The Solution:

• JLGs of willow weaving were organised in the project area – the first such in the State
• 5 groups were provided with loans of Rs 50,000 each by the Elaqai Dehati Bank

The Impact:

• Inspired by the initiative taken at Okai, 10 JLGs have been formed so far
• Credit of Rs 7.5 Lakh from Elaqai Dehati Bank availed by 7 JLGs
• Dawn of a brighter future for weaver families
