Case 1: The power of credit from savings
Name: Shobha

Ms. Shobha lives in Kancheepuram with her husband and two children. Her husband
works in the registrar’s office and earns about Rs. 8,000 per month. The area she lives in
is rather poor as most of the men here predominantly worked at unskilled jobs, like
construction or as daily farm labor. She has been part of the group “Nesam” since 2008
as its animator. She proudly displays her books of accounts which do seem complicated
to handle for women who have barely gone to school. However, at least 50% of the
members seem to be living in pucca houses which seem to have the latest amenities. Ms.
Shobha too lives in such type of house. The house in which we interviewed her had
marble flooring and was equipped with the latest gadgets. (Exhibit 1)
