Why Savings?
As it was a mandatory requirement, the group members of Nesam have been saving
periodically. The NGO suggested that they start with a minimum savings amount and
hence they started saving Rs.50 per head per month. Within four months, they felt that
the amount was rather low and the corpus that was collecting was not substantial enough
to give internal loans. Hence they increased the amount to Rs. 100 per head per month.
Internal loans are those given to members according to their need and the choice of the
member is by a democratic decision in the group. In this group most internal loans were
given for house repair, education of children and medical purposes. They continued with
saving Rs.100 per head per month for the next three years. Subsequently, they increased
