SECTION 3
Chapter 5: Analysis of Demographics
5.1
Why Demographics
Studies of a population based on factors such as age, race, gender, economic status, level
of education, income level and employment, among others is demographic study.
Demographics are used by governments, corporations and non-government organizations
to learn more about a population's characteristics for many purposes, including policy
development and economic market research. Demographic trends are also important, as
the size of different demographic groups will change over time as a result of economic,
cultural and political circumstances.
Analysis of any data requires a basic understanding
of its characteristics namely the demographics, hence we first study the basic nature of
the data before we both discuss and examine the project objectives. In present context
the average age of an SHG member is very essential. This would give us an idea of their
potential. Also family size depicts the number of dependents on her. We start with
comparing the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka sample on these two demographic
characteristics.
5.2
Age & Family Size
An investigation of demographics of the data gives a bird’s eye view of the nature of the
data collected. The sample size was 900, however due to missing information we had to
drop 25 data points from Tamil Nadu. Hence, we find that in total the sample consists of
875; 575 from Tamil Nadu and 300 from Karnataka. The average age was not
significantly different between the two states as can be seen from Table 5.2 and 5.3
