Chapter 9: Symbolism of Voluntary Savings
9.1
Introduction
The symbolism of savings in SHG groups has often been a much debated question.
“Mandated savings” were started with the hope to benefit members in their livelihood
activities as well as in planning their lifecycle needs. Also through this habit of savings it
is hoped that members do not only access credit but will be introduced to a range of
financial services that will benefit them.
In this chapter we address the research question “Do savings remain a symbolic element
rather than its use as a true saving tool for poor household? Does the amount of savings,
which the SHG decided at its formative stage, continue to be enforced, oblivious of the
increased savings potential of the members with increased incomes, post credit linkages
with banks?” (TOR 4)
9.2
Amount of Savings
We find that in many groups members start out with an initial “mandated saving”.
However it has either increased or remained the same. The initial average savings and
the present savings is discussed below.
