More than half (52%) of the total NPA amount of

4,002 crore as on
31 March 2017 belonged to States in Southern Region and it increased
during the year from 49% during the previous year. The quantum of NPAs
increased in Western Region, as well, from
R
187 crore in 2015-16 to
R
250
crore, mainly because of
R
58 crore rise in Maharashtra. The share of NPA
in Eastern and Central Region declined in 2016-17 as compared to 2015-16
(Figure 4.10).
While three Southern States viz. Tamil Nadu (19.3%), Andhra Pradesh
(12.5%) and Telangana (9.2%) together accounted for 41% of the total
NPA amount as on 31 March 2017, four other States viz. Odisha, Bihar,
West Bengal and Maharashtra accounted for another 24%. During the
year, Karnataka recorded increase of
R
131 crore in the quantum of NPAs
followed by Telangana
R
111 crore. The State-wise status of NPAs in bank
